Presentation of the book Psychotherapy for Ischemic Heart Disease
Presentation of the book "Psychotherapy for ischemic heart disease. An evidence based clinical approach"
7th of October 2016, at 6 p.m., Circolo Antico Tiro a Volo, via Eugenio Vajna 21, Roma.
A person’s psychological state plays a significant role in their risk, manifestations and consequences of ischemic heart disease (IHD), whether acute or chronic. It works both by influencing patient beha-vior — thereby increasing or reducing exposure to risk factors like sedentary living, poor diet and high levels of emotional stress — and through bidirectional psycho-biological effects involving the various pathophysiological systems that contribute to IHD development. It therefore often constitutes an ominous vicious circle worsening car-diac prognosis, being simultaneously a cause and a consequence of IHD.
This book describes a range of psychological interventions for IHD patients that, when integrated with medical therapy, have been proven to enhance patient outcomes. It provides practical details about the application of these interventions, and both extensive the-oretical and published empirical justification of their use. This ex-tends to the most recent, state-of-the-art approaches, as well as to future applications, yielding insights into practical models that inte-grate psychotherapy with medical practices in the hospital, outpa-tient clinics and rehabilitation programs. Such models are already being used in various settings with encouraging results.
The book itself is the collaborative work of 34 experts across the fields of psychotherapy, pharmacology, internal medicine and both clinical and interventional cardiology. In this way, it offers a novel vi-able, evidence-based, inter-disciplinary approach to managing IHD patients.
